Christmas shopping with Ernie in the Ouseburn

Ouseburn deli, Ernie is launching some de-lightfully festive weekends to help us all shop ethically this Christmas.

Ernie is holding a series of Christmas weekend events

If you’ve been to the Ouseburn in the last few months and not managed to make it your business to visit ethical deli Ernie, then you’ve missed a treat.

Located in the heart of Newcastle’s delicious cultural quarter, Ernie was launched in February 2021 as a useful and unique shop which has kindness – both to people and the planet – at the heart of its mission statement.

Aiming to be a tasty blend between a wholefoods corner shop, farmers market, deli, bakery and off-licence, it offers a diverse and handpicked selection of locally-sourced food and drink, together with some lovely homeware to serve it up in.

For its first Christmas, staff at Ernie are hoping to tempt Christmas shoppers who want to minimise their carbon footprint, with two festive weekends championing local makers and small organic producers.

Ouseburn Deli Ernie is holding some special festive weekend events in the run up to Christmas

Called Ernie’s Christmas De-lights, these special events, taking place on November 26-28 and December 17-19, will feature carefully curated hampers and a range of responsibly wrapped gifts while also offering a chance for customers to meet local makers who will be popping up with stalls and taster opportunities from the popular Ernie food and drink hatch.

The store, which can be found down the hill and around the corner from its big café bar brother, Ernest, will also play host to the launch of specialist handcrafted bottled cocktails by Room for Fishes – the latest venture of Newcastle cocktail connoisseur, Roy Varty.

Ernie founder, Kate Hodgkinson says: “As well as supporting and championing the North East economy, our aim has always been to curate and stock as much local produce as we can find that is kinder to the planet because it hasn’t travelled far.

“This is definitely showcased in our Christmas offer alongside organic, bio-dynamic, fair trade and small batch production.

“We’ve got a wide range of gifts from our ‘local heroes’ hamper to a craft beer selection box featuring North East brewers to some beautifully handmade ceramics, soaps and candles plus a range of essential Christmas chutneys, coffee and chocolate all from small producers who are passionate about the products they make.”

As well as basketsful of stuff to buy for your nearest and dearest, there will be lots to enjoy too, including fire bowls, marshmallow toasting and sparklers; hot pot food and chestnut roasting; mulled cider, cherry wine and Christmas cocktails; personal shopping elves and festive tunes, twinkly lights and more.

Ernie’s Christmas shop will also feature some ‘made by Ernest’ goodies all based around some of its best loved food and drink items. Ernie/Ernest branded gifts and vouchers are also available both in store and in the café bar.

Kate added: “We have seen a rise in the shopping local trend and I really hope people will continue to embrace this and support independent stores and makers this Christmas.

“We’ve put a lot of time, effort and love in curating these ethical gift ranges and can’t wait to launch them at the end of the month in store.”
