What is it?
The JG Windows glorious mothership is located in the Edwardian Central Arcade in the city centre. Windows flagship store comprises three floors of wall to wall music.
You can buy instruments, sheet music to play on them or just albums of people playing them for you. Alternatively if that all sounds a bit hectic you can find a banging pair of noise cancelling headphones. Meanwhile, if you find yourself in the Gateshead MetroCentre, you’ll find a sister shop just waiting to be explored.
Why is it smashing?
Opened in 1908, Windows is one of the UK’s longest established music stores and is the musical equivalent of Ollivander’s wand shop in Harry Potter; a mystical and magical place where precocious adolescents are paired with their first guitars, violins or triangles under the watchful and wizened eyes of friendly and knowledgeable musical matchmakers. It’s also a place where first and favourite albums can be found and browsing can be enjoyed.
