What is it?
A beautiful Grade I listed theatre on the Westgate Road, which English Heritage ranks somewhat precisely as “in the top 4% of listed buildings”.
After changing hands several times in the second half of the 20th century the theatre is now fully restored to its original glory and plays host to an impressive mix of stand up comedy, live music, theatre and live action kids shows.
Why is it smashing?
The famous Tyne Theatre Panto is packed with old school laughs and slapstick scrapes, and should be a staple part of the Geordie family Christmas, along with queuing for Fenwick’s window and enjoying a Greggs Festive Bake.
Also, the Tyne Theatre is surely the only Grade I listed theatre in the country that was briefly an X-rated cinema in the 1970s.
