Sage Gateshead

What is it?

A magnificent concert venue and centre for musical education, proudly sat on the south bank of the Tyne.  Some of the world’s finest musicians have played the venue, attracted by the purity of the sound, and it is also home to the amazing Royal Northern Sinfonia chamber orchestra.

The Sage, as most people call it, has two venues, Sage One being a traditional arena with a capacity of a little over 1,600, and the snugglier Sage Two holding 600 in what is perhaps the world’s only 10-sided performance space.

Why is it smashing?

Taking the phrase ‘purpose built’ to new levels every aspect of the conception and construction of the Sage was geared towards making it sound fantastic, from the special concrete used by the builders to the moveable wooden ceiling panels in the main stage.

The result is about as close to acoustic perfection as has been achieved anywhere in the world – if Glenn Miller’s plane suddenly appeared out of a cloud you can be sure his comeback concert would be held on the stage inside Sage One.
